G.K.Lukomsky aims mainly to evoke sympathy for the artistic appearance of Kostroma, to the preserved in it. “old” and to the quiet city to this day – the household way. And we must admit that this part of the task was masterfully executed.
Chapters devoted to the description of the architectural appearance of Kostroma sometimes give the most successful combination of accurate and subtle analysis with artistic proficiency. Let us give an example of at least one place from the description of the Trinity Church: “The soft outlines of the beads (on the kokoshnikov), the thrust of cornice transitions, the edges of corners, grated, as if intentionally, by the hand of a sensitive artist – give an impression. "Molding" of all forms of construction: and it becomes so obvious that in the hands of the ancient master there was no compass and ruler! (p.76) By one apt indication G. Lukomsky reveals to us the historical cause and at the same time illuminates to us the beauty of the forms of the Trinity Church with a new and convincing force. To the same undoubted "luck" of the book, we include the department that concludes a review of the monuments of Kostroma Kush - X1X centuries. Honor "discoveries" of such exemplary creations of domestic construction as Kostroma - guardhouse, fire tower, Gostiny Dvor, House of Nobility - entirely belongs to the author. Kostroma. We only have to regret that small, often “lubricated”, and therefore inconclusive pictures rather destroy our charm.
But here we are forced to make a few reproaches to the publication. The stamp of haste and typographical negligence lies on the whole book, from the binding, from many proofreading oversights to reproductions, so often murky and in most cases giving just the opposite idea of Kostroma than the one that the author wants us to suggest. Unsuccessful seems to us and the very idea is to give the publication a look. The Hermitage by Alexander Benoit. The other part of the task set by the author seems to us not quite achieved - to give an aesthetic approach to the wall paintings of Kostroma churches, to give not only a description of them from the historical side, but also from the side of their color, skill, concept, technique and psychology of the painters who created them. A number of quotations exclusively from the works of N. V. Pokrovsky confuses the matter. The scientist was just the least concerned about the aesthetic "approach" that G. Lukomsky aims, hence the fragmentation and confusion of the pages devoted to the analysis of the painting of the Kostroma school.
However, G. Lukomsky in a very modest size touches on temple paintings – this is rather only a tribute to the modern fascination with ancient Russian painting, and therefore the book retains integrity.
